“Pavels singing lessons and voice training are a massive help to me. I learned more in a few weeks with Pavel than 3 years at a Drama school! He made it very easy to understand vocal technique and I found my voice 'freeing' in just a few lessons. My confidence in singing increased tenfold and we also worked on spoken vocal technique for a character I was having difficulty with. I would heartily recommend a course with Pavel to increase your vocal power, confidence and knowledge.”
What I offer
I offer private individual training, weekend workshops and teleseminars for both beginners and experienced voice actors. I also teach in schools for students of all ages, for example I have most recently been working with a group of students who are taking a BTEC National Diploma in Drama.
Breathing technique
By using the correct vocal technique, you will force your body to breath properly, as it will no longer be able to reply on tension in the throat for voice production.
Your voice can be rich, loud and powerful, whilst retaining the emotion and individually which define you as an actor/actress.
Portraying Emotion
I can show you how to utilize the correct voice technique which will expand the range of emotion you are able to portray, and widen your repertoire. Learning how to use your voice correctly, will give you more options to choose from when deciding how to deliver a line, and will demonstrate a professional edge in your next audition.
Voice acting
Over the years I have assisted many people in the art of providing voiceovers for advertisements, animated characters and radio shows/soap-operas. More recently, people have started approaching me about producing voiceovers for computer games – which use much the same principles as other forms of voice acting.
In some ways, voice acting is easier than acting live on a stage, because there is less need to ‘throw’ the voice to fill an auditorium. This means that there is less to think about (a bit like driving an automatic car), so you can concentrate on how your voice portrays emotion and character traits.
Accents
The Italian accent is a fine example of how pronunciation can affect your voice technique. By pronouncing A as ‘ahh’, E as ‘ehh’, I as ‘eee’, O as ‘oh’ and U as ‘ooo’, their voice resonated beautifully and their vocal technique is perfect.
Obviously, many of my students are required to speak in different accents, depending on what part they are playing, so we work together to retain as much of the correct technique as possible, without losing sight of how their character would pronounce words in his/her accent.
Injury & Recovery
Sadly, many people wait until their throat starts to hurt before calling me. Bad technique is often exposed during the intense rehearsals in the month leading up to a performance for example, or whilst putting in a lot of preparation for an important audition.
I can help you recover from injury by giving you advice on how to use your voice correctly which will give your throat a chance to recover. As a seasoned performer myself, with years of training and teaching, I know what works and what doesn’t when it comes to practical advice on how to protect your voice in your day-to-day life. If your voice is your livelihood, then you must protect it as though it were a valuable musical instrument.
Singing
Some actors are required to sing, either for auditions or the parts themselves, or both. A good voice coach will also be a good singing teacher, because it is essential that the same good voice technique is utilised for both speech and singing. We can spend part of the lesson on speech, and part of the lesson on singing if that would be beneficial to you – I tailor my lessons to my student’s requirements.
